Contesting

I have a great love for contesting, and I enjoy participating in several contests throughout the year. I have participated in Summer Field Day operations for 39 consecutive years, and 2025 will be my 40th year. I have participated in several other contests, including the North American QSO Party, the CQ WPX, and the November Sweepstakes.

In 1985, James Cowley, WI7J, and I organized the first Field Day in St. George. In retrospect, we made many mistakes, but we learned from them and gradually improved our operation.

I had a memorable Field Day on June 27, 1992. I was driving home from a contest in Victorville, California, to Palm Springs. I had left early so that I could get back in time for the contest. I was driving through the small city of Landers about 3:00 AM. At 4:57 AM, the 7.3 Landers Earthquake hit. It was a memorable Field Day, to say the least!

I'm the president of the Utah South Universal Contest Club (USUCC), a small contest club. I sometimes use the club callsign NA7UT, especially during the CQ WPX contest. Check out the awards I've won here.

I am a member of the Dixie Amateur Radio Club. I use their callsign, W7DRC, when I am contesting with the club.

I am passionate about contesting and enjoy presenting my views and tips to amateur groups nationwide. I recently gave an hour-long presentation at HamCon: Zion, the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Convention. If you are interested in having me speak to your group, please contact me at k7dlx AT k7dlx DOT com.
